slowness and pause

Sometimes life goes a little to fast, and we lose perspective. I have been suspecting that has been the case recently, in the moments I have taken to slow down and actually reflect. After all, the goal is to live deliberately, not rushed or haphazardly. In assessing my time and lifestyle, I realize that I have been a) spending too much time on the Internet, or in front of a computer screen b) not dedicating enough time to being outdoors, or on my feet and c) not taking time to focus in on just one thing, and truly devote my attention to it.

In order to rectify these imbalances in part, I brought my laptop to work today, where it will remain until I feel that it might be useful to have back at my place. This eliminates the scenario of coming home from work and plopping down in front of yet another electronic screen. I also hope to take some time (when I have it, which will be later this week) to sit down and just listen to a piece of music. No distractions, just me and the work of art. I am in part inspired by this article I just read about a fellow YSO musician who hosts "listening parties". Beautiful idea, and somehow very quintessentially Yale as well.

In other Yale-related news, I am headed to the Yale Club in New York this evening for an alumni event. Something tells me I will be more enthralled by the train ride than the destination occasion itself (what can I say--I really like trains), but it should all be fairly interesting. Just another Tuesday night, slowly morphing into mid-week...
